Ocean Institute

Sorbonne

Vision

The Ocean Institute (OI) at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is an interdisciplinary research institute dedicated to marine science and studies and focusing on examining the ocean, its ecosystems, life forms and its conservation and protection. UAE-based structure, part of SUAD’s research institute, SAFIR, the OI is the mirror institute of the Institut de l’Océan at Sorbonne Université in Paris, a member of the Sorbonne University Alliance and the biggest Marine University in Europe.

Building on the world-class expertise of Sorbonne University and its marine stations in oceanography, the Institute combines scientific excellence, technological innovation, and social and legal insights to deliver Science for action; research with a real-world impact. Bringing together biologists, mathematicians, biochemists, legal experts and data scientists, the Ocean Institute is actively participating to the development of marine studies in the Middle East, positioning Abu Dhabi and the UAE as a regional leader in ocean research and contributes to advancing the UN SDGs.

Context

Launched during COP28 in December 2023, the Ocean Institute reflects SUAD’s commitment to interdisciplinary research and innovative solutions for marine and coastal ecosystems. It unites experts in oceanography, biology, AI, social sciences, and law, along with government and industry partners, to tackle the most pressing challenges facing our seas.

Guided by FAIR data principles, the Institute ensures that the knowledge it generates is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable, empowering collaboration and innovation. Early initiatives have focused on coastal and marine protected areas in Abu Dhabi with projects exploring biodiversity, mangrove restoration, and sustainable resource management.

At its core, the Institute integrates two cutting-edge research laboratories - Biomolecular Sciences and Biochemistry -and collaborates closely with the center for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI) while providing a dynamic environment for PhD candidates to produce innovative research. Amongst its scientific figures, it counts renowned experts and researchers Prof Olivier Adam, Prof Jean-Luc Jung and Prof Tarik Méziane and Dr Giulia Demasi. The Institute acts as a platform for action and exchange on vital topics including biodiversity protection, AI and robotics, the blue economy, coastal resilience, plastic pollution, decarbonization, and education. By hosting landmark events like ‘Towards the UN Ocean Conference 2025’ and the ‘National Ocean Cluster,’ it connects policymakers, researchers, and global leaders to drive innovation and shape a sustainable ocean future.

Sorbonne

Ambition

The Ocean Institute is charting an ambitious course to become a region’s hub for ocean science and innovation. Its goals include:

  • Advancing research through pioneering projects in marine acoustics, molecular biology, biochemistry, and AI-driven ocean modeling.

  • Supporting National ambitions with flagship missions and partnerships with local public and private entities and regulatory authorities, including environmental DNA (eDNA) mapping and biodiversity studies.

  • Educating and empowering talent by creating opportunities for students and researchers to gain field experience, internships, and specialized training.

  • Building global partnerships that link the UAE’s strategic priorities with Sorbonne University’s extensive research network and international expertise.

By uniting science, technology, social science and policy, the Ocean Institute aims to drive actionable solutions for ocean health and contribute to a sustainable future for communities and ecosystems worldwide.
