Sorbonne Centre for Artificial Intelligence (SCAI)
Vision
In a national and international context of competition in artificial intelligence, SCAI brings together a strategic range of modern AI disciplines in the heart of Paris and at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi.
Context
SCAI aims to contribute significantly to interdisciplinary research and education in artificial intelligence by promoting collaboration between researchers, students, and industry. Since 2019, in Paris and Abu Dhabi, the institute has been building a unified research and teaching centre with a distinctive approach to developing diverse, inclusive, and enriched AI.
In line with the objectives of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s 2019 research agenda, SCAI Abu Dhabi’s main objective is to establish Chairs in Artificial Intelligence through partnerships with both Emirati and international companies.
The institute was officially launched in January 2020 with two industrial partners, Thales and Total, who inaugurated two research Chairs in Abu Dhabi in the presence of Jean Chambaz (former President of Sorbonne University and Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi) and H.E. Zaki Anwar Nusseibeh (Cultural Advisor to the President of the UAE and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi).
Ambition
SCAI Abu Dhabi aims, in the medium term, to position itself as a key player in artificial intelligence in the United Arab Emirates and the wider Middle East, while promoting academic excellence in this field. This will be achieved through three main actions:
- Mobilising expertise from Paris (more than 200 permanent academic researchers) and the Abu Dhabi team to strengthen research activities and develop new synergies.
- Fostering sustainable partnerships with international companies in the region.
- Developing research-based training of the highest quality and hosting PhD candidates.
