Biographie

Melanie van den Hoven is a Visiting Professor in the Master of Business and Foreign Language Education department and an international lecturer and researcher in applied linguistics and intercultural education. Her work focuses on language use in educational and professional contexts.

She holds a PhD in Intercultural Education from Durham University, supported by a Sheikh Nahayan Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship (TIRF), based on an ethnography of female Emirati pre-service teachers’ perspectives on English-medium instruction. She has taught in English language education and TESOL programs in the UAE and South Korea and has received funding from the Emirates Foundation.

She also led a cross-cultural communication team in a joint venture nuclear power plant in the UAE, developing work group communication strategies for a multilingual workforce. Her work draws on social constructionism to examine how meanings about language use is negotiated in intercultural contexts. She enjoys collaborative research addressing English language use and lingua franca communication, risk and safety communication and workplace communication.
