The Portuguese fortress heritage in and around the Gulf: An important testimony to early global interaction

Principal Investigator : Dr Delphine Syvilay and Co-PI: Yann Rodier

This project aims to explore the monumental heritage of the UAE, focusing on the various forts built during the Portuguese presence in the Gulf between the 16th and 17th centuries. These forts represent a lesser-known heritage that deserves greater recognition and promotion. In fact, they are an integral part of the UAE's history. However, although some have been excavated or restored, there has never been a comprehensive comparative study of these forts in terms of their architecture, iconography, historiography and historical significance. This project focuses on several forts in the UAE, proposing a holistic approach through 3D digitization comparison, archival research and archaeology of construction to gain a better knowledge of this specific heritage. As such, this project builds on previous research on the Portuguese occupation in the region and aims to provide new data using the latest methods. We will also investigate other Portuguese forts in the Gulf region, including sites in Kuwait and Oman, as well as Socotra (Yemen), to gain an overview of this heritage in the wider region and enrich our understanding of the Portuguese influence at the time.
