الوصف

The Department of History is continuing its series of lectures on diplomatic relations between Europe and the Gulf States. This second session explores how these relations evolved during the 19th and 20th centuries, drawing on archival sources. From Franco-British rivalries to the Great Game, and from the ‘fight against piracy’ to oil diplomacy, it examines the establishment of British pre-eminence and the strategies of Gulf actors, notably Oman, Kuwait, the Saudi authorities and the emirates of the Truce Coast. It analyses how these actors negotiated their alliances and autonomy in the face of European ambitions. The end of the protection treaties and the founding of the United Arab Emirates in 1971 ushered in a new phase: the entry of the new states into multilateral diplomacy and the diversification of their relations with Europe, soon extended by the Euro-Arab dialogue.
