الوصف

The Department of History is launching, with this topic, a lecture series devoted to diplomacy between Europe and the Gulf States, as part of the Jean Monnet Chair. This introductory session is devoted to the birth of European diplomacy in the Gulf and the Indian Ocean during the early modern period (16th–18th centuries). The aim is to present the first diplomatic contacts between Europe and the Gulf at the dawn of the first wave of globalization.

With the opening of the route to the Indies at the end of the 15th century, a new maritime route connected Portugal to the Gulf, which then diversified with the arrival, in the early 17th century, of other European powers via the East India companies. In search of new markets in Asia, the Dutch, British, French, and Danish diversified the connections between Europe and the Persian and Arab Gulf. This laid the foundations of an early "Khalidjian" (Gulf-focused) diplomacy, involving complex economic, military, and political stakes. This inquiry will draw on a range of archival sources, offering an introduction to the earliest historical ties between Europe and the Gulf.
