From 10 to 17 July 2025, seven faculty members and researchers from the Department of French as a Foreign Language (FLE) at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi took part in the XVIth World Congress organized by the International Federation of Teachers of French (FIPF) in Besançon. This major event in the field of Francophonie brought together more than 1,500 teachers from 180 countries, providing a unique platform for scientific, pedagogical, and cultural exchange on the teaching of French worldwide.
Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi was particularly well represented, with a total of nine contributions — four workshops and five oral presentations — highlighting the diversity of didactic, technological, and intercultural approaches advanced by its faculty members.
In chronological order, the interventions were as follows:
- 12 July 2025: Sharpening learners’ meta/epilinguistic awareness through translingual self-writing, oral presentation by Karine Germoni.
- 14 July 2025: From French as a Foreign Language to French as a Language of Instruction: placing language learning at the heart of the metacognitive process, oral presentation by Julia Peres Vergnes.
- 14 July 2025: Teaching variation in a heteroglot environment: challenges and issues in implementing a pedagogical model, oral presentation by Tifany Bourdeau.
- 15 July 2025: Francophone utopias and pedagogical practices: an exploratory approach to teaching oral production in a university context in the United Arab Emirates, oral presentation by Hajiba Ankach Boufroukh.
- 15 July 2025: Conducting conversation workshops with Lego bricks in French as a Foreign Language, workshop led by David Sauvignon.
- 16 July 2025: The metaverse, a new utopia for language teaching? The case of virtual reality games for learning French as a Foreign Language at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, oral presentation by Théry Béord.
- 16 July 2025: From body to language: theatre practice as a tool for intercultural dialogue, workshop co-led by Julia Peres Vergnes and Salah-Eddine Adadain.
- 16 July 2025: How to use environmental educational frescoes in the teaching of French, workshop led by David Sauvignon.
- 17 July 2025: Small excerpts, big ideas: the TV5MONDE methodological approach to using authentic audiovisual resources, workshop led by Hajiba Ankach Boufroukh.
The active participation of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s faculty members reflected the department’s expertise and dynamism, while also enhancing the institution’s international visibility in the field of French language teaching and research.
