السيرة الذاتية

Emilio Ocampo Eibenschutz is an Assistant Professor of Middle Eastern Studies at the History Department at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi and Zayed Military University. He earned his PhD in History at Cornell University specializing in mobility, colonial state formation, and global interconnections in the modern period. He has developed, implemented, and published research projects in Middle Eastern history, archaeology, sociolinguistics, and cultural politics across different institutions in the region. His current book project, Mobile Papers / Mobile Subjects: Documents, the Bureaucratization of Mobility, and Colonial State Formation in the Western Indian Ocean, 1890–1950, analyzes how documentary practices shaped emerging forms of governance, migration, and political belonging across the Arab Gulf, the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, and South Asia. Using travel permits, passports, pilgrimage passes, freedom papers, petitions, and other forms of documentation as an analytical thread, he investigates how colonial administrations sought to regulate increasingly mobile populations and how local individuals and political authorities appropriated these same bureaucratic tools to adapt, negotiate, assert, and contest their position within emerging infrastructures and state apparatuses.
