Educational innovation

At Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, educational innovation plays a central role in enhancing the student learning experience and supporting the development of key academic and professional competencies.

Within language education, SUAD has developed a rich ecosystem of digital learning initiatives that combine artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and immersive learning technologies to create engaging, learner-centred experiences. These innovative approaches provide students with new opportunities to practise communication skills, receive personalised feedback, and engage in authentic learning activities beyond the traditional classroom.

Together, these initiatives illustrate SUAD’s commitment to leveraging emerging technologies to support active learning, learner autonomy, and meaningful student engagement. They form a coherent pedagogical ecosystem that accompanies students throughout their learning journey, from pre-arrival preparation and autonomous practice to immersive communication and AI-supported feedback.

Pandora: Preparing students for success before they arrive on campus

Pandora is Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi's online preparatory course for students entering French-medium programmes.

Launched in 2021, this Small Private Online Course (SPOC) is completed before the start of the Foundation Year and provides students with an introduction to the French language, French culture and the academic environment of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi.

Accessible through the University's learning management system, Pandora combines video capsules, interactive activities, quizzes and discussion forums to help students acquire essential linguistic and cultural foundations before joining their classes.

The course allows learners to become familiar with key aspects of university life while developing their first communication skills in French. It also promotes learner autonomy and facilitates the transition to higher education by encouraging students to engage actively with learning before arriving on campus.

Pandora now forms an integral component of the Department's broader digital learning ecosystem, supporting students from their very first contact with the French language.

Nora: An AI-powered companion for continuous language practice

Introduced in 2023, Nora is an educational chatbot designed specifically for learners of French at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi.

Accessible directly from students' mobile devices, Nora supports learning beyond classroom hours through personalised revision pathways, self-assessment activities and curriculum-based practice.

Thanks to the integration of generative AI technologies, students can:

  • Practise oral communication;
  • Receive support for written production;
  • Review grammar and vocabulary;
  • Access personalised learning activities aligned with their courses;
  • Engage in regular revision throughout the academic year.

Nora encourages learner autonomy while helping students maintain continuous contact with the French language.

Award-winning VR experiences for language learning

Since 2021, the Department of French as a Foreign Language has developed a growing library of immersive virtual reality (VR) learning experiences designed to place students in authentic French-speaking environments.

Using VR headsets, students interact in realistic situations such as:

  • Ordering food in a restaurant;
  • Buying bread in a bakery;
  • Purchasing train tickets at a train station;
  • Checking into a hotel;
  • Shopping in a clothing store.

These immersive scenarios encourage learners to use French to accomplish meaningful tasks and develop confidence in real-life communication situations.

In 2025, five of these original VR learning experiences were awarded the Pedagogical Innovation Prize of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF) in recognition of their contribution to language education and educational innovation.

Combining Virtual Reality, AI and teacher guidance

In 2026, SUAD introduced a new generation of VR learning experiences through a partnership with the French company VRAI Learning.

This innovative simulation combines virtual reality, speech recognition, artificial intelligence and gamification to create an immersive oral communication challenge.

In the game designed by FLE Department, students are placed in a virtual kitchen where they prepare traditional French crêpes while explaining each step of the recipe entirely in French. As they progress through the activity, the system evaluates their oral production and provides personalised feedback.

Learners receive detailed analysis covering pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy or discourse organisation.

Beyond the learner experience, a platform provides teachers with a powerful pedagogical monitoring tool. Instructors have access to the complete transcript of every interaction between students and the virtual characters, as well as the AI-generated feedback provided after each activity. This allows them to identify recurring difficulties, monitor individual progress over time, and use the data to inform classroom teaching and targeted support. Rather than replacing the teacher, AI-generated feedback serves as a valuable starting point for further pedagogical guidance, helping instructors better understand learners’ needs and tailor their interventions accordingly.

Learn French with VR

VR in Education - Episode 1 | The Train Station & The Hotel

This episode drops learners into the south of France with two missions: buy a train ticket without missing the train, then check into a hotel. Numbers, pronunciation, polite French, passport details, all spoken, all in real time.

VR in Education - Episode 1 | The Fashion Boutique

First stop: the boutique "Bonjour." One mission, buy a birthday gift. To get there, you greet the assistant, ask for items, describe colours, and pay, all in French, inside a 3D world that listens and responds in real time. No pressure, no penalties, just a safe space to speak and take risks.
