Date: Wednesday 23 April -Thursday 24 April 2025 Time: 9:00 am - 1:45 pm Venue:Marie Curie Amphitheatre, SUAD Campus Open to public Abstract Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi cordially invites you to the conference on “Thinking, Preventing, and Managing Natural Risks”. Does the 21st century mark the beginning of a new "risk society" where natural disasters appear both more severe, uncertain, and endogenous? Natural disasters are not new, but they increasingly attract attention due to their scale, now posing severe threats to very large populations, sometimes without spatial boundaries. While it is difficult to answer this question with certainty, it is undeniable that our planet has experienced particularly striking disasters since the start of this century, due to their human toll, financial impact, or ecological consequences. Generally, the financial cost of damages has risen to approximately 250 billion in 2023. The increase in the number of these disasters and their impacts is largely caused by the concentration of urbanized areas in high-risk zones. The United Arab Emirates, where most of the population resides within 100 km of the coast, is therefore highly exposed to the dangers of extreme hydroclimatic phenomena (such as flash floods) and the effects of rising sea levels.
