Centre for Health and Care
The Centre for Health and Care is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge research on public health, medical innovation, and healthcare systems through an interdisciplinary lens. Bringing together expertise from the social sciences, economics, humanities, machine learning and artificial intelligence fields, the Centre tackles questions related to health and care in modern societies and economies.
A key area of the Centre’s research focuses on health economics, including the analysis of healthcare financing, the evaluation of public health policies, and the study of economic models of health insurance. Researchers examine how health systems can be structured to provide sustainable, efficient, and inclusive care, while also evaluating the long-term impacts of policy decisions on public health outcomes and access to care. The Centre is also a hub for research on technological innovation in healthcare, particularly the development and implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital tools. Scholars investigate the ethical, clinical, and social implications of AI in medical diagnostics, decision-making, and care delivery, with an emphasis on ensuring that technological progress is aligned with equity, accessibility, and the public good.
In addition, the Centre engages in biomedical humanities, investigating how historical, cultural, ethical, and philosophical perspectives shape human understanding of medicine, illness, and care. This humanistic approach allows for critical reflection on the practices and narratives that inform both biomedical research and patient experience. The democratisation of health knowledge is another core priority. The Centre explores how information about health can be made more transparent, accessible, and inclusive, empowering individuals and communities to engage with healthcare systems more effectively and equitably.
