CENTRE FOR GLOBAL SOCIETIES, CULTURES, CITIES AND ARTS
The Centre for Global Societies, Cultures, Cities and Arts is dedicated to understanding the dynamic and evolving relationships between societies, cultures, and urban environments. Its interdisciplinary research brings together perspectives from the humanities, social sciences, and urban studies to examine how cultural practices, identities, and social dynamics interact with the development of cities and communities across the globe.
A central focus of the Centre is the study of migration and human mobility, investigating how population movements shape urban life, cultural identities, and social integration. Researchers explore the lived experiences of migrants and displaced populations, the transformation of urban spaces through mobility, and the implications for social cohesion, governance, and urban infrastructure. The Centre addresses critical challenges in urban planning and development, with particular attention to transportation systems, public space, and sustainable infrastructure. Research in this area examines how cities can be more inclusive, accessible, and sustainable.
In parallel, the Centre contributes to scholarship on international relations and transnational histories, focusing on the circulation of people, ideas, goods, and cultural forms between nations and regions. This includes the study of colonial and postcolonial exchanges and relations, international conflicts and economic crises, as well as global artistic mobilities and shared heritage, providing a historical perspective on today’s interconnected world.
Through comparative, historical, and contemporary research, the Centre contributes to a deeper understanding of how societies confront common global challenges while highlighting the local specificities of the Gulf region.
