Excavating Abu Dhabi: Voices of a new generation of Emirati archaeologists
Description
In recent years, a new generation of Emirati archaeologists has taken centre stage in the study and protection of Abu Dhabi’s heritage. Working in the field, in laboratories and in museums, they represent a dynamic moment for archaeology in the UAE, combining rigorous research with a deep sense of cultural identity.
This symposium brings together young Emirati archaeologists to share their work, their professional journeys and their perspectives on how archaeology shapes contemporary understandings of identity and place in the Emirates. Through short talks and a moderated conversation, the speakers will present ongoing projects from across the emirate, from offshore islands to desert sites and oasis landscapes, and reflect on the challenges and opportunities of working in heritage today.
The event highlights the essential role played by Emirati professionals in documenting and preserving the archaeological record and invites students and the public to engage directly with those who are actively shaping the future of heritage research in the UAE.
