About the research
Underground caverns carved in rock salt are used to store things like hydrogen, natural gas, and sometimes nuclear waste. Salt slowly changes shape over time, and that movement needs to be predicted so the caverns stay safe. In this study, we squeezed small cylinders of rock salt in the lab and watched how they changed, hour by hour. We then tested many ways to forecast that slow movement, from analytical models to modern AI tools. We introduced a deep-learning model that was the most accurate for forecasting salt rock creep deformation. Better predictions help engineers spot issues earlier and design storage sites with more confidence.
