Marina Lévy

Director of the Ocean Institute (Paris and Abu Dhabi)

Bio

A graduate of the École Polytechnique (Oaris) and an oceanographer, Marina Lévy is a CNRS Research Director and currently heads the Ocean Institute of the Sorbonne University Alliance, after serving as Ocean Advisor at the Institut de recherche pour le développement (IRD). She promotes a vision of science that is both inspiring and distinctly feminine, attentive to both the beauty and the fragility of the ocean.

In 2025, together with other scientists, she launched the Starfish Barometer, the first annual ocean health report published every June 8 on the occasion of World Oceans Day. Its purpose is to make scientific advances and ongoing initiatives to preserve the vital connection between humanity and the ocean more accessible to the general public.

Her book, co-written with Olivier Poivre d’Arvor and published in 2026 by Stock Editions, "When the Ocean Awakens", extends this commitment: telling the story of the ocean in a different way, at the crossroads of geopolitics, science, storytelling, and the urgency of our times.
