Signage Policy

Purpose 

The Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) Campus Signage Policy is designed to outline the Health and Safety preventive measures that SUAD can implement to control, limit, and minimise the Health, Safety, and Environmental impacts of smoking within the university premises. 


Scope 

This policy applies to all members of the SUAD community, including students, staff, stakeholders, vendors, contractors, and associated support services. 
 

Introduction 

SUAD recognises that the use of appropriate signs and signage is a critical component of the Health and Safety arrangements on the premises and is essential to ensure the well-being of staff, students, and visitors.  

The university acknowledges that safety signs and symbols must be provided where a risk, identified through a risk assessment carried out under the Health and Safety at Work Regulations, cannot be controlled by other means. 

In addition to safety signs, SUAD shall provide signs that direct people to where they want to go and signs that provide information, such as classroom numbers. 

At SUAD, signs will be used to mark the following. 

  • Prohibitions, e.g., smoking, running 

  • Mandatory requirements, e.g., wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) 

  • The location and identification of escape routes and emergency exits, e.g., fire exits 

  • Fire safety including the locations of fire equipment 

  • Warnings of places where there is a risk of falling or of colliding with obstacles 

  • Traffic routes 



Definitions 

Prohibition Signs: Ban certain actions. They have a white background with a red circular band and crossbar, e.g., No Smoking. 

Warning Signs: Have a black triangle on a yellow background, with the symbol or text in black, e.g., Caution, Risk of Electric Shock. 

Mandatory Signs: Give instructions. They have a blue background, with the symbol or text in white. e.g., Head Protection Must Be Worn. 

Safe Condition Signs: Are square or rectangular in shape, with a green background and the symbol or text is in white. e.g., First Aid or Direction Signs. 


Responsibilities 

  • Management shall give strategic guidance, monitor and review the policy, and ensure that adequate resources are available. 

  • HSE / GSD shall post signs in a manner and location that adequately notify students, staff and visitors. 

  • Students Affairs shall enforce consequences for students engaging in the prohibited behaviour. This will be provided in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Students who violate this policy will be referred to the guidance counsellor, other health or counselling services for all offenses for health information, counselling and referral. Parents/guardians will be notified of all violations and actions taken by the university. 

  • HSE/HR shall enforce appropriate consequences for employees who violate the policy, in accordance with personnel policies. Disciplinary actions may include a verbal warning, written reprimand, or termination of employment. 


Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (SUAD) management requires active commitment to and accountability for this policy. Line management has a leadership role in its communication and implementation, while also ensuring compliance.
