Phasing Out Single-Use Plastics at SUAD
As part of its commitment to environmental responsibility, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi has made significant strides in reducing single-use plastics on campus. SUAD recognises that plastic pollution poses a global challenge and is taking meaningful steps to become part of the solution.
From Plastic to Purpose
In 2024, SUAD successfully began transitioning away from single-use plastics:
- Over 18,800 plastic items were used early in the year, but usage dropped to zero by December, marking a complete phase-out of plastic disposables by the end of the year
- During the same period, the use of eco-friendly alternatives surged, exceeding 122,000 units, demonstrating the university’s commitment to more sustainable procurement
2025: A Plastic-Free Start
Building on 2024’s success, minimised plastic items use in the first quarter of 2025. This achievement highlights the cultural and operational shift across the campus community and vendor partnerships.
Meanwhile, eco-friendly alternatives continue to thrive, with:
- 15,379 Kg items used in January
- 22,520 Kg in February
- 3,976 Kg in March
This reflects a consistent demand for sustainable materials, despite rising student numbers and increased activity.
What Enabled This Transition?
- Sustainable procurement policies prohibiting plastic disposables
- Vendor compliance and alignment with SUAD’s sustainability targets
- Awareness campaigns promoting reusable and compostable products
- Ongoing monitoring and reporting by the Facilities and Sustainability Team
SUAD’s Commitment
We are proud to say that SUAD is well on its way to becoming a single-use plastic-free campus. By setting an example in the education sector, the university aims to inspire responsible consumption patterns and support national and global plastic reduction goals.
