Description

Date: Wednesday 7 May 2025 Time: 5 pm - 7 pm Venue:Marie Curie Amphitheatre, SUAD Campus Open to public Abstract Digital nomads and international remote workers utilize digital technologies to perform their work while travelling across international borders. The covid-19 pandemic has given further impetus to such digital nomadic mobilities and remote work by profoundly transforming the way people work, migrate and move across borders. Above fifty countries around the world have developed new visa programs or adjusted their preexisting immigration pathways to legalize such trends. Merely legalizing these phenomena is far from adequate since such trends entail the risks of impacting destination local communities negatively. Given that international remote work mobilities are rapidly being embraced by both individual workers, states and private sectors, there is an urgent need to govern them in ways that contribute to inclusive and sustainable development of the local communities. Informed by fieldwork in Mexico, Thailand and Italy and empirical qualitative data gathered among international remote workers, state officials, and private agencies operating as intermediaries in facilitating international remote work mobilities, this paper unpacks the opportunities and challenges posed by these transformations and reflects on the policy and governance solutions to the problems especially for the local communities that largely remain on the receiving end.
